School Snack and Packed Lunch Advice
We are conscious that there are a range of different foodstuffs coming in for morning snacks and in lunchtime lunchboxes. We would like snacks and lunches to be as consistent (and as healthy) as possible between those taking a school lunch and school offered snack and those bringing their own in from home. We are sharing two sets of advice, one for morning breaks (or afternoon breaks for EYFS and KS1) and another for lunchtime snacks. We are aiming for a common-sense approach, with the key being to keep it healthy and no nuts, chocolate, sweets or crisps during breaktime. If you are intending to send in healthy snacks with your child for breaktimes please limit them to being from the list below.
- Vegetables/ vegetable sticks – such as celery, cucumber, peppers or carrot.
- Pieces of cheese (cheddar cheese or Babybel etc).
- A piece of fresh or dried fruit – apple, satsuma, grapes, pineapple, mango, kiwi, plain raisins, apricots, blueberries, banana etc.
- Bread sticks, plain pretzels, small pitta breads, oat/rice cakes or plain crackers. These could be paired with some hummus or yoghurt dip.
- Yoghurt pot or Yoghurt tube.
- Hard-boiled egg.
- Plain popcorn.
- A sandwich or wrap with a simple filling (not with lots of mayonnaise).
Cereal Bars are problematic, and although there are some which are healthy there are many that would not be suitable. We are happy to discuss specific acceptable bars should your child not be able to eat any of the above. These products would need to be low in sugar, cereal only (no nuts) and not contain chocolate to be acceptable.
For lunchtime packed lunches we would expand the above list and add:
- Banana bread, malt loaf or similar low-sugar cake.
- Cereal bars (although please keep in mind the above advice as some are very high in sugar).
- Lean meats.
- Pasta, potato and rice salads
- Nachos or crisps.
- A small portion of a home-prepared meal.
- A fruit juice drink.
We hope this advice is clear and helpful. If you do have any queries please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
School Milk Scheme
Did you know our school has a school milk scheme? By registering your child for our school milk scheme, they will receive a 189ml (third of a pint) carton of semi-skimmed milk every day. This is delivered fresh and chilled to their classroom every day.
How much does it cost?
Due to government subsidies, school milk is free for all under-fives and is subsidised at around £15 a term for children aged five or older.
Why should I register my child?
School milk provides your child with essential nutrients such as calcium and protein, for strong, healthy teeth and bones. It is also rehydrating and energy boosting, helping to bridge the long gap between breakfast and lunch so children stay focused.
