Maths Intent Statement

At Guildhall Feoffment, the intention of our Mathematics curriculum is to develop problem solving skills which we view as essential to success in adulthood, as well as a curiosity and enjoyment of Maths as a subject. Children develop fluency and reasoning skills at an increasingly sophisticated level to prepare them for Maths in high school. Progression is clear across key stages and skills are built upon and revisited appropriately. Higher attaining pupils are challenged and less confident pupils are given the tools to be as independent as possible. Maths has a high profile across the school and is evident in various curriculum areas to show its real life applications.

Through our teaching of mathematics, we aim to meet the requirements of the national curriculum to:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
